WHO YOU ARE MATTERS

Where I’ve Been

If you ask me where I’m from I will tell you I’m from Philadelphia without any hesitation. The reality is I live about 15 minutes away from Philly-- right over the bridge in New Jersey. My town doesn’t have much to do, but it does feature a pizza shop on every corner. In high school, we ran a bracket to determine which pizza was best.

Where I’m Going and How I Hope to Get There

After graduation, I want to work in sports marketing for a team, league, or agency. I don’t have a long-term career goal. Instead, I just know where I want to start.

I’ve already begun to take steps to get there. I have worked two internships and have plans to complete at least one more before I graduate. My mentor has been instrumental in my career development this year: helping me with my resume, portfolio, and preparing me for interviews. I hope this helps me in securing my last internship and that it will lead to a full-time job offer.

Am I Like My Parents? Where Do I Get My Expectations From?

I have my dad’s sense of humor and my mom’s need for organization and cleanliness. However, I think I am much more worrisome than both of my parents.

A lot of this worry comes from the expectations I have for myself. Growing up I made up my own goals, but after continuously meeting them, other people started to have higher expectations of me, too. So, while the expectations started as my own, I think they are now mixed with others’.

A Role Model

I think Naomi Osaka is a good example of someone that lives with passion and personal responsibility. She clearly has passion for her sport but is also willing to use her platform to take a stand against racism or for mental health.

Connections to Nature

When I was younger, I went on a trip to the Bahamas and bought my grandfather a little figurine of a monkey. He put it on his dashboard and after he passed away, the figurine was given to me. Therefore, if I had to pick a wild animal that I am connected to, it would definitely be a monkey.

I have one specific memory of a tree from my childhood. I was given a sapling for Earth Day, and my dad and I planted it in the woods in our backyard. We put a marker there to watch it grow. It never did.

  1. Hi Samantha!

It is SO cool that we both come from the same place! I am also like 10 minutes away from Philly; I live across the Palmyra-Tacony bridge in Palmyra if you've heard of it!!! What city are you from? I'm missing Wawa and cold weather like crazy lol.

I also love Naomi Osaka. She kicks butt on the tennis court. I also heard she started her own sunscreen/skincare company for those that have melanated skin tones? I don't know how she does it, but she is amazing.

I love your big three! So much earth! I don't think I have a single splash of Earth in my chart...everything is Air lol. My mom is a Virgo Sun, so I have a strong love for all Virgo Suns haha. Super cool!

  2. Hi Samantha! I really enjoyed reading your blog. I could really relate to how you listed your expectations. I definitely feel the same way in that they are a mix of others and my own because of goals I have reached and what people expect of me. I also thought the pizza bracket was hilarious. I also related to where you're going and your career aspirations. For me, I know I want to go to med school and I know where to start with that-- but don't know exactly where I will end up!

  3. Hey Samantha, thank you for sharing with us. I also want to go into the sports business industry with similar aspirations at the moment-- I know where I want to start but I'm not really sure where I would like to finish. What's your favorite sport and who's your go-to team or player? Personally, mine is baseball and the Dodgers have been my team since I picked up a ball. I relate to your comment about being too worrisome as well. I sometimes find myself worrying about things that aren't necessary or are out of my control, and my parents manage to always make the issue seem so much smaller.

  4. Hey Samantha, super cool reading your blog. Its great meeting other east coasters out in LA. (Im from DC area). One of the things I miss about the east coast is how good the pizza is especially around new york and philly. I liked how you mentioned you didn't have a specific long term goal but you know where to start. It's funny because I have long term goals but have no idea how to start. Good Luck!

  5. Hey Samantha,

Thanks for telling us about yourself, I enjoyed reading your first blog post. Unlike you, I'm not from a small town, but I have always wondered how people from a small town transitioned to a large city like LA. I think it's good that you already have some plans for the future and good luck on your internship. Like you, I look up to Naomi Osaka as a role model as she is super young, but already at the top of her sport. Along with that I support her stance on both racism and mental health. I also think that monkeys are definitely cool and I wish that I could have a pet monkey because its like having a little friend that keeps you entertained.

  6. Hey Samantha,

I want to first offer you my heaviest condolences for having to suffer through four years of LA pizza, it truly is a travesty. I'm also from the east coast so I understand the pain you must be going through having so many choices and then coming to LA where domino's is often the best option. Sports marketing seems fun, and I totally relate to not having a long term goal, just a place to start. It's not worth it in my opinion to pick some blind goal without beginning to experience working in an industry. It seems like you're certainly on the right track for getting there though.

I think having mixed expectations is natural. Although living on our own expectations is great too, having those other expectations can sometimes push us beyond what we believe we're capable of.

  7. Hi Samantha,

Hah I just got done reading your post and literally did a little laugh out loud when I saw the "it never grew". So classic. Anyways, very cool you are from the East Coast. Very similarly, I say I am from Seattle but in reality I grew up in areas 15 minutes - 1 hour away from the bridge connecting the east side to the west side (where Seattle is). I think it is cool that you want to pursue a career in sports. I have considered that many times and have still not ruled it out. I would love to hear how your two internships went to get a little insight!!!

    Thanks for sharing,

    Mason

  8. Hey Samantha!

I enjoyed reading your blog post! I'm a big fan of pizza, but am always told LA doesn't do it justice. Have you found a spot here that you like or reminds you of home?

I loved how you approached the where you're going question with where you're starting. I think sometimes we put so much emphasis on the future that we forget present about the present and how to strategize the from where we are, if that makes sense. The fact that you're already putting in work and creating goals to get there shows dedication and progress.

I also resonated with your worrisome-ness and complex relationship with expectations. I'm sorry your sapling never grew! I had a similar situation with a basil plant.
