World We Dare to Imagine Part 1

World We Dare to Imagine Part 1

If I could follow any dream or passion to make the world a better place, I would focus on education. Equal opportunity for education is something that I have been interested in since high school, when I realized all of the opportunities I had been given that others never have access to.

This ultimately inspired me to work with Há Esperança after my freshman year here at USC. Há Esperança is a NGO based in Brazil that focuses on providing educational materials to children in the favelas of Rio. I acted as a project consultant for them at the onset of COVID to help with their marketing and fundraising efforts to ensure that the children would have access to reading materials during the pandemic. By working with them over the course of the summer, I got to see the impact that education has on children and solidified my interest in providing equal opportunities for it.

So, ideally I would like to work towards all children across the world being able to receive a quality education. I’m not exactly sure how it would be implemented, but I do think it could even be started in the US. School systems in the US vary in quality state by state, and city by city. In one country, students should not have to be concerned about how different their education is from someone that only lives a mile down the road from them.

However, I would eventually like to see equal education opportunities expand across the globe. Every child, no matter where they were born or their economic status, should be able to learn to read, write, and be able to develop interests and passions.

I believe so much of what I have been able to accomplish in life is because of the education and teachers I had as a young child. They cared so much about me being able to learn and really instilled a love of learning in me that has followed me to this day. I just want everyone to be able to develop that love for learning in hopes that they, too, can accomplish all the things they dream of as a child.

  1. Hi Samantha,

I entirely agree, I think education is the key to pursuing opportunities and helping improve the world. It's definitely a cyclical issue when education isn't furnished, but when it is it also creates cyclical success.

The problem itself is huge though, and sometimes I feel like with something on such a large scale it can be overwhelming to think what one person could do to solve it. I really like what you said about how interactions with teachers especially at a young age can be so key to instilling a love of learning at a young age. It's definitely easy to send a bunch of books to a country and hope they read them, but inspiring this curiosity and providing the framework for learning is the disconnect that's hard to bridge.

I think focusing on this point of connecting individuals with role models / teachers could be a direction to take when looking for a specific goal. You talked a little about the geographical differences causing inequality in education access, so maybe finding a way to bridge that could be helpful. I think modern technology can offer a lot of opportunities to cross these boundaries of communication and potentially provide these opportunities to students.

Great ideas, and I'm excited to see which direction you choose to take.

  2. Hi Samantha,

I'm glad you were able to have that experience consulting for the NGO in Brazil. It sounds really cool!

I am also interested in providing equal education opportunities every where. In terms of suggestions, I think focusing on the U.S could be a great start. Is there a specific age range that you would be interested in helping? I know a lot of Title I schools really lack the resources to provide the same level of eduction to the students. That could be something you look more into.

    Best,

    Lesley
